Bor took it from Malekith five thousand years ago and buried it where no one would find it, which worked until Jane Foster fell through a wall in London. It moves like liquid, chooses a host, and turns the universe dark if pointed correctly; the Collector explains what it actually is in a post-credits scene, and nobody in the film hears him.
