Who they are

Layla knows the tombs, the dealers and the forgeries, and she is the only person in the series who treats Marc's condition as a fact about someone she loves rather than a symptom. She spends six episodes refusing a god's offer of a job, and the terms on which she eventually takes one are hers.

From the comics

The Scarlet Scarab was somebody else

Layla is an original character for the series, but the identity she ends up with is not: the Scarlet Scarab was Abdul Faoul, an Egyptian nationalist hero introduced in the 1970s Invaders run set during the Second World War. The series makes him her ancestor by implication and hands the name to her.

Invaders #23 (1977), Roy Thomas and Frank Robbins
