Who they are

Doug Jones in a motion-capture suit, Laurence Fishburne's voice, and easily the best thing in Rise of the Silver Surfer: a herald who has been doing this for centuries under an arrangement he made to save one planet. The film understands the tragedy of the character even when it has no idea what to do with Galactus, who arrives as a cloud.

The Galactus Trilogy

Three issues that invented the cosmic Marvel universe: a world-eater, his herald, and a herald who changes his mind because a blind sculptor is kind to him. Kirby drew the Surfer without being asked to — he simply decided Galactus would have an outrider.

Fantastic Four #48–50 (1966), Stan Lee and Jack Kirby
