What it is
The Mark I is scrap and sheet metal; the Mark 85 is a liquid that becomes a suit on request. Between them are a suitcase, a Hulkbuster, forty drones with personalities and the whole engineering arc of a man who kept building a better fence. The films are careful that the suit is never the hero; Iron Man 3 spends two hours proving it.
