Who they are

Heir to Stark Industries and its arms business, Tony spends a decade making himself the thing he was afraid of: the only person who can be trusted with what he built. The armour is the easy part. The Avengers Initiative, Ultron, the Sokovia Accords and finally the Blip are all him trying, and repeatedly failing, to put a fence around a world that keeps getting larger.

From the comics

Extremis rewrote him

The comics Tony injects a techno-organic virus that stores the armour inside his own bones and hollow tissue. Iron Man 3 lifts the villain and the name but not the premise — which is why the film's Extremis regenerates limbs and explodes rather than turning Tony into a walking antenna.

Iron Man vol. 4 #1–6 (2005), Warren Ellis and Adi Granov

Armor Wars

Tony discovers his designs have leaked into other people's suits and goes after every one of them, including allies and government hardware, wrecking his reputation and his government contracts in the process. It is the purest version of the anxiety the films keep circling: the man who cannot stop trying to put a fence around what he built.

Iron Man #225–232 (1988), David Michelinie and Bob Layton
