Who they are

Introduced as a black-market fixer in a place where S.H.I.E.L.D. is a legend, and gradually revealed to have a personal stake in the people telling the legend. He is the comic relief and the exposition, and the series keeps quietly promoting him. His grasp of the twentieth century is entirely secondhand and mostly wrong.
