Who they are

Steinfeld's Gwen carries the emotional weight of both films: a girl whose universe is drawn in watercolour that changes colour with her mood, who has already lost her Peter and has decided not to have friends again. Across gives her the best sequence in either film — a domestic argument with her father, staged on the ceiling.

A variant cover that became a character

Spider-Gwen started as a one-issue what-if — the Gwen Stacy who was bitten instead of Peter — and the hood-and-ballet-shoes design was so immediately popular that Marvel gave her an ongoing series within months. Almost nothing in Marvel has been reverse-engineered from a costume that fast.

Edge of Spider-Verse #2 (2014), Jason Latour and Robbi Rodriguez
