Who they are
Jack is polite, apologetic and clearly there for a reason other than the trophy, and the special spends its first half letting you wonder what it is. The whole thing is shot as a 1940s Universal horror — grain, wipes, an orchestra — and he is the sympathetic one in it.

Marvel’s horror decade
Jack Russell arrived when the Comics Code relaxed and Marvel went straight for monsters — he shares that moment with Ghost Rider, Blade, Man-Thing and Morbius. His curse is hereditary, tied to a book called the Darkhold, which the MCU has since put to a very different use.
