Who they are
Seven feet of vegetable matter with burning eyes, hunted as the prize in a monster hunt, and named Ted by the one person who ever talked to him. The special gives him a glow-up sequence, a getaway and the only genuinely tender relationship in the story.

Whatever knows fear
Man-Thing is Ted Sallis, a scientist who crashed into a Florida swamp with a super-soldier serum in his veins and came out as this. He is barely sentient in print, empathic rather than verbal, and he burns anything that feels fear near him — which the special quietly declines to do.
