Who they are
Not the Mary Jane of the comics and pointedly not trying to be — the MCU's MJ is a sardonic academic-decathlon kid who notices things. Her arc ends with her forgotten by the person she loves, working in a coffee shop, which is a far bleaker landing than the character has ever had on screen.
