Who they are

She recruits John Walker in a hallway, points Yelena at Clint Barton in a cemetery, sits across a table from Everett Ross in Wakanda Forever as director of the CIA, and in Thunderbolts* is finally the main event: a woman assembling disposable assets so she can dispose of them in one go. The film's trick is that her plan works and she still loses — the people she wrote off become the thing she cannot fire.

She was a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent first

Steranko's Val is Fury's lover and one of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s best field agents for forty years of publication, before Secret Warriors reveals she was always working for someone else — first Leviathan, then HYDRA, then herself as Madame Hydra. The films skip straight to the last part.

Strange Tales #159 (1967), Jim Steranko; Secret Warriors #1–28 (2009–2011), Jonathan Hickman
