What happened
Mar-Vell's engine is powered by the Tesseract. Carol Danvers destroys it, takes the energy into herself, and loses six years to a Kree cover story about who she is. It is also, incidentally, the last anyone sees of the Tesseract before Howard Stark's files resurface.
