Who they are

An Air Force test pilot who absorbed the Tesseract's energy destroying an engine to keep it from the Kree, then spent six years being told she was a Kree soldier with anger-management problems. Captain Marvel is about the specific insult of being coached to be less — and the MCU's most powerful being is, structurally, someone who spent her origin being told to smile.

From the comics

She was Ms. Marvel for thirty-five years

Carol only took the Captain Marvel name in 2012, after six other characters had held it. DeConnick's run — the flight jacket, the test-pilot framing, the Air Force history — is where essentially all of the film's version comes from.

Ms. Marvel vol. 2 #1 (2006); Captain Marvel vol. 7 #1 (2012), Kelly Sue DeConnick
