Who they are

First Steps plays him straight: not a cloud, not a metaphor, a giant in armour who lands on Earth-828 and is too large to fight. He wants a successor, because eternity is heavy, and he has noticed a child. The film's best decision is to make him tired rather than evil — hunger is a fact, and the Fantastic Four's job is to make him hungry somewhere else.

From the comics

He survived the previous universe

Galan of Taa was the last living being of the cosmos before this one, and rode its collapse into ours as something that must feed to exist. His heralds are given the Power Cosmic to find worlds for him; the Silver Surfer was the first, and the one who turned on him over Earth.

Fantastic Four #48–50 (1966), Stan Lee and Jack Kirby; Thor #169 (1969)
