What it is
Reed, Sue, Johnny and Ben live on an Earth where the 1960s got the future they were promised, and they are its most famous residents: scientists, celebrities and parents-to-be, protecting a world that adores them. First Steps skips the origin and the squabbling and gives them a world already built around them — which is what makes the arrival of Galactus, and their crossing into the main timeline, land as a loss.

The book that started the Marvel Universe
Fantastic Four #1 is the first Marvel comic in the modern sense: heroes who argue, live in a real city and have a landlord. Everything else — the Avengers, Spider-Man, the shared universe itself — is downstream of Lee and Kirby deciding that a superhero team could be a family that does not get along.
