What it is

A klyntar: a species that needs a host to survive and is far more agreeable about the arrangement than its reputation suggests. Sony's films play it as a buddy comedy about two roommates who eat people; Raimi's Spider-Man 3 plays it as a costume that makes you worse, arriving by meteorite rather than by probe.

From the comics

It started as a costume

Peter picks up a black suit on Battleworld, wears it for four years of publication, and only then learns it is alive. Venom is what it becomes after Peter rejects it and it finds someone who hates him — a slow burn no adaptation has had the runway to reproduce.

Secret Wars #8 (1984); The Amazing Spider-Man #300 (1988), David Michelinie and Todd McFarlane
