Who they are

Blinded as a child by the chemical spill that sharpened everything else, raised by nuns and a boxer, and practising law in the neighbourhood he beats people up in at night. The character runs on a genuine contradiction the show refuses to resolve: he is a devout Catholic who believes the violence is a sin, and he does it anyway, most nights.

Born Again

Karen Page sells Matt's identity for a fix, and Kingpin uses it to dismantle his life piece by piece — law licence, home, sanity — before Matt rebuilds from nothing. The Disney+ series takes its name from it.

Daredevil #227–233 (1986), Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli
