Who they are
Schmidt took an unfinished serum that amplified everything ugly in him, which is the film's neatest statement of its own thesis. The Tesseract removes him from Earth in 1945 and the franchise's strangest joke is where he turns up seventy years later: on a cliff on Vormir, cursed to guard a stone he cannot use, explaining the price to other people.
