What happened

A Brooklyn volunteer who had been rejected five times goes into a pod in a Lower East Side antiques shop and comes out the only successful super-soldier the programme will ever produce. Erskine is assassinated within the hour by a HYDRA operative, taking the formula with him — which is why every subsequent attempt, from Ross's to HYDRA's to the Flag Smashers', is a reconstruction that goes wrong in a different way.
